Identify the question you need to resolve
Summarise what happened, what you hope to achieve and your main concerns. Separate facts you observed yourself from information provided by others. You do not need to identify the correct legal classification before speaking to the firm.
Organise documents with their context
Gather contracts and annexes, correspondence, payment records and any documents already received from a court or another authority. Keep complete documents and messages in their original context without editing them. A document list helps identify missing material before considering next steps.
Highlight important dates
Prepare a short timeline of signatures, payments, letters received and scheduled appointments or hearings. Include any evidence of when documents were received. Do not assume that requesting an appointment puts a deadline on hold; flag any approaching date immediately.
Clarify the proposed engagement
The consultation helps identify questions requiring further review, additional documents and possible options. Ask about the proposed scope of work, fees and potential expenses. Keep your online enquiry brief and wait for the firm’s instructions before sharing confidential documents.
This guide helps you prepare for a discussion with the firm. It does not determine the parties’ rights or the deadlines applicable to a particular matter.
